SAEC Diagnostic http://www.southernalbertaeyecenter.com/diagnostic/ http://www.southernalbertaeyecenter.com/diagnostic/#comments Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:43:26 +0000 http://www.southernalbertaeyecenter.com/?p=339 Diagnostic Services

Prior to or after examination by the ophthalmologist, additional testing may be required to facilitate prompt and accurate diagnosis and treatment of an ocular condition. These specialized tests allow us to best serve the needs of our patients in an ophthalmology clinic with multiple subspecialties.

Our wide range of on-site diagnostic services allow thesecomprehensive patient assessments to be conveniently completed in one office and with fewer visits, saving time and travel for the patient.

Fluorescein and ICG angiography (standard and wide-field)

  • An assessment of the vascular condition of the retinaand or choroid for conditions such as diabetes, macular degeneration, central serous retinopathy and uveitis
  • We utilize both standard and wide-field angiography as indicated by the condition being examined
  • Fundus photography

    • Provides a photography visual record of the retina to closely monitor change or progression in conditions such as glaucoma, ocular nevi, and ocular melanoma

    Slit lamp photography

    • Assists in the management of anterior ocular conditions such as iris nevi, iris cysts, trauma, pseudoexfoliation, and corneal ulcers.

    Ultrasounds(anterior and posterior)

    • Ocular ultrasounds allow us to visualize changes within the eye without being restricted by factors such as vitreous hemorrhages or dense cataracts that otherwise obstruct or limit the ophthalmologist’s view. Retinal and choroidal detachments, nevi, melanomas, retinoschisis, traumatic changes, narrow angles, and many other eye conditions are more easily diagnosed and monitored through ultrasound assessments.

    Visual fields

    • Used to monitor subtle visual changes throughout the central and peripheral vision to better diagnosis and manage diseases such as glaucoma and optic neuropathy.

    Cataract lens calculations

    • Prior to cataract surgery, we measure the shape and size of the eyes to accurately choose a customized prescription lens to provide the best possible visual results. Therefore, following a cataract procedure, patients often no longer require prescription glasses for their distance vision. This test also allows us to offer specialty premium lenses to those patients that would benefit from a more specialized intraocular lens.

Oncology http://www.southernalbertaeyecenter.com/oncology/ http://www.southernalbertaeyecenter.com/oncology/#comments Mon, 28 Jul 2014 09:23:17 +0000 http://www.southernalbertaeyecenter.com/?p=306 Ocular oncology is the branch of ophthalmology dealing with tumors relating to the eye and its surrounding structures.Eye cancer can affect all parts of the eye, including the globe (the eye itself), the eyelids, the orbit, as well as the conjunctiva (the membrane that covers the inside of the eyelids and the sclera).

    Examples ofintra-ocular tumors include:

    • Choroidal Melanoma
    • Ciliary Body Melanoma
    • Iris Melanoma
    • Circumscribed Choroidal Hemangiomas
    • Choroidal Osteoma

    Examples of eyelid tumors include:

    • Basal cell Carcinoma
    • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
    • Examples of orbital tumors include:
    • Cavernous Hemangioma
    • Dermoid Cyst
    • Sphenoid Wing Meningioma
    • Ocular Lymphoma

    Examples of conjunctival tumors include:

    • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
    • Primary Acquired Melanosis
    • Conjunctival Melanoma

Treatment of eye cancer can include observation, radiation, laser, and surgical excision. Should you and your surgeon decide that surgery is the correct option, you will you will receive your pre-operative instructions from your surgeon’s office prior to your surgery at SAEC. These instructions include not eating or drinking after midnight the night before your procedure. You will be asked to arrive at SAEC at a specified time, which will allow time for you to have your eye dilated for the procedure, and to meet the anaesthesiologist working with your surgeon that day. Your surgeon, anaesthesiologist, and yourself will determine the type of sedation that is necessary. In the operating room, there will be two additional nurses there to assist you and your surgeon, and the length of your surgical procedure will be dependant on the specifics of your situation. After your procedure, a nurse will go through your postoperative instructions with you, and ensure that you have made arrangements to be transported home with your friend or family member.
